Barnstable is the largest community, both in land and in population, on the Cape. The town takes its name from Barnstable, Devon, England, and was first explored by Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602. It was one of the first towns to be settled in Plymouth Colony, One year behind Sandwich.
Like most of the region, early industries included farming, fishing and agriculture, but by the late 19th century, Barnstable had become renowned as a premier summer destination. Many prominent Bostonians spent their summers here, including Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland, and most notably the Kennedy Family, who still inhabit the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port. Barnstable has significant sights and historic houses listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a 2007 winner of the All-American City Award. The town’s many beaches are a popular tourist destination as well.
